1935 – At age 17, Ella Fitzgerald recorded her first songs: “Love and Kisses” and “I’ll Chase the Blues Away.”

1977 – The Supremes performed for the last time together at Drury Lane Theatre in London and officially disbanded.

1990 – Mariah Carey’s self-titled debut album was released. Her biggest hit from that album was Vision of Love.

The country superstar Tim McGraw was born on May 1, 1967. Happy birthday, Tim!

McGraw has had 11 consecutive albums debut at Number One on the Billboard albums charts, and twenty-one singles hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He has won 3 Grammy awards, 14 Academy of Country Music awards, 11 Country Music Association awards, 10 American Music Awards, and 3 People’s Choice Awards. His Soul2Soul II Tour with his wife Faith Hill is the highest grossing tour in country history, and one of the top five among all genres of music.

Tim has also taken up acting the last few years, including roles in The Blind Side, Friday Night Lights, Four Christmases, and Country Strong. And he’s pretty good, along with being quite nice to look at.

Alicia Keys

Today, Alicia Keys turns the ripe old age of 30! The muti-Grammy award winner first came on the scene with her smash debut album, Songs in A Minor, in 2001. Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, was another success worldwide, and included the hit “If I Ain’t Got You.” Her hit “No One” appears on her third studio abum As I Am. The Element of Freedom, released in December 2009, contains the single “Doesn’t Mean Anything.”

Gerry Rafferty (1947-2011)

Gerry Rafferty has died at the age of 63. He was a Scottish singer and songwriter best known for his 70’s hits “Baker Street” and “Right Down the Line.”

“Baker Street” reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 2 in the U.S. The album sold over 5.5 million copies, knocking the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack from the top spot in the U.S. on July 8, 1978.

This classic features a marvelous saxophone solo by Raphael Ravenscroft. In October 2010, the song was recognized by the Broadcast Music, Inc. for notching up over 5 million plays worldwide.

“Stuck in the Middle with You,” a hit with his band Stealer’s Wheel made a comeback 20 years later when it was featured in a pivotal scene in Quentin Tarantino’s film Reservoir Dogs in 1992.
